Microsoft unveils voice-activated device

MIAMI-Microsoft Corp. unveiled a prototype of what the company see’s as the future in wireless communications at its annual Latin America Enterprise Solutions Conference in Miami.

During the keynote address, by company chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates, Microsoft took some time to deliver the first public demonstration of MiPad, a high-speed, wireless, Web-enabled, voice-activated device.

Using only voice commands and a few clicks on the device, Microsoft’s Steven VanRoekel was able to call a meeting, invite a person, set a time and designate a place.

Then he told the device to, “forget it,” and the meeting disappeared from the screen.

“What MiPad will do is integrate the ability of e-mail, calendar, contacts, all the things Windows CE does, with a high-speed wireless connection, so I can do voice over it, I can do phone calling, I can do anything I would normally do with a PDA,” VanRoekel said.
