PCIA asks for CALEA extension on two-way paging to 2001

WASHINGTON-The Personal Communications Industry Association said it has asked the Federal Communications Commission to extend the digital wiretap deadline for two-way pagers to 2001.

“The paging industry and FBI agree that these dates reflect reasonable deadlines by which most paging and wireless messaging carriers should be able to implement [the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act of 1994] solutions for the defined services. In some instances, carriers may be compliant before the agreed-upon deadline. In other instances, especially concerning the two additional features requested by the FBI, carriers may require more time,” said PCIA.

PCIA said the extension petition contains a revised implementation schedule that has been agreed to by both industry and the FBI. Traditional one-way paging carriers would be compliant by the original CALEA deadline of June 30. Under the proposal, paging carriers would have until June 30, 2002, to comply with CALEA requirements for location and voice-mail services.
