Cable & Wireless incorporates operations

LONDON-Cable & Wireless plc formally launched Cable & Wireless Global, incorporating operations in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and Japan.

C&W said revenues for the year ending March 31 for the businesses that now make up C&W Global totaled $5.5 billion, and it employed more than 14,500 people around the world.

The launch comes on the heels of C&W Communications’ restructuring, with C&W now having full ownership of CWC’s operations providing services to business customers, and NTL controlling the U.K. consumer and residential businesses.

C&W noted that the new Global group will be led by Mike McTighe, chief executive officer of global operations, and Don Reed, CEO of global services, who will both report directly to Graham Wallace, chief executive of C&W.

McTighe will manage strategy, product and business development, marketing, networks and technology globally for the company, enabling quicker product development and delivery around the world.

Reed will manage sales and customer service locally through business operations in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and Japan as well as globally through Global Markets’ multinational customer channel and Partner Services’ channel for carriers and service providers.

In addition, all C&W Global employees who do not already participate in an existing share option plan will be offered a one-off C&W share option grant worth at least 25 percent of their salary.

“This is the first time Cable & Wireless has been able to run as an integrated global organization,” commented Wallace. “This structure is unique in the industry and gives us real competitive advantages. With this new structure, Cable & Wireless has the ability to develop products that can be quickly and efficiently delivered around the world to capitalize on the fast growing [Internet Protocol] market.”
