ALEXANDRIA, Va.-Attempting to balance public-safety concerns with industry realities, the Personal Communications Industry Association modified its technical standards for advanced messaging and ancillary services, enabling paging carriers to be compliant with the requirements of the 1994 Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act.
The revised standards, focusing on voice mail and location capabilities, were developed by PCIA’s Paging Technical Committee as the result of discussions with law enforcement representatives. PCIA noted that any paging provider or manufacturer that complies with these updated standards will have a “safe harbor” and will be considered in compliance with CALEA’s assistance capability requirements.
