Granite introduces portable version of Xperweb

Granite Systems Inc., a telecommunications network configuration management solutions provider, unveiled its Xperweb Portable Edition, which runs on a Palm VII wireless device and allows technicians to view and update network data information anytime wherever there is coverage.

John E.P. Borden, president and chief executive officer of the company, said the solution began as a skunkworks project and was developed by one of the company’s engineers. Borden said after seeing a prototype of the system, the company decided to make it an official project.

“We are confident that offering technicians in operations access to network information via portable devices such as the Palm VII will greatly streamline operations tasks by providing an increased level of flexibility and mobility out in the field,” said Borden. He noted the company is interested in extending the solution to other wireless devices.

Granite said Xperweb Portable Edition, which will be commercially available during the next quarter, eliminates the need for technicians to rely on paper reports and allows them to view work queues and update tasks in the field.

The Xpercom family automates network engineering and administration, including facilities assignment, provisioning, network planning, network design and inventory tracking. Other products in Granite Systems’ Xpercom suite of products include Xpercom, Xpercom Visual Edition, Xpercom Network Interface Module and Xperworx.

Granite also announced a strategic alliance with Fujitsu Network Services that calls for Granite’s Xpercom solution to be incorporated into Fujitsu’s portfolio of Network Operations Center services.

Granite’s Xpercom inventory and design management solution will be combined with Fujitsu’s system and network implementation and integration outsourcing for public network providers. As a result of this agreement, Granite said it will further expand its reach into a large public network market, while Fujitsu will enhance its ability to deliver integrated operational support systems and professional services.
