Nokia enters broadband market

ATLANTA-Nokia Corp. introduced its RoofTop Wireless Routers and Bridges for the residential and small-business market, and CityHopper Broadband Wireless Access products for mid-size and large businesses.

The Nokia RoofTop Wireless Routers create mesh networks that model the structure of the wired Internet, Nokia said. Signals are routed around objects such as buildings and trees to different routers, eliminating the need for line-of-sight to an access point.

The Nokia AIR Operating System, running in each wireless router, creates networks that self-configure by automatically detecting new or removed routers, and then redirects the signal to the most efficient path, said Nokia.

The RoofTop Wireless Routers operate in the license-free 2.4 GHz Industrial, Scientific, Medical frequency band. The Nokia RoofTop Wireless Bridges operate in the 5.8 GHz frequency band.

Nokia said its CityHopper Broadband Wireless Access solution creates point-to-multipoint wireless access networks for high-speed voice and data services. The CityHopper solution operates within the licensed millimeter wave bands between 10 GHz and 40 GHz.

“Our new wireless broadband solutions will enable operators and service providers to quickly build their networks according to the growing demand for high-speed Internet connectivity, accelerating time to market and capturing additional market share,” said Aru Leppa, general manager, Nokia Wireless Routing.
