Motorola doesn’t respect end users’ privacy

Dear Editor,

I have been following with great concern the exchange of letters in your publication between Motorola Inc. and one of its two-way radio dealers. It appears that the Motorola dealers have much to be worried about. However, I am dismayed that nobody has seen fit to ask the actual end-user customers how they feel.

My company is in the security control and alarm business. We are involved with the deployment and use of almost 300 two-way radios, which were purchased from local dealers. Because of concerns for the highest levels of security for ourselves and for our customers, we have always depended upon these dealers to keep information regarding our purchases confidential.

Now, I learn that these dealers are required to forward the very information that we consider highly sensitive to Motorola or the manufacturer will stop shipping radios to them.

Well, I have been in the business for many years, and I can tell you that I have never come across a company that would rather lose its end users than rescind a program that appears to be so ill-conceived. But that’s exactly what will happen, because I have instructed those dealers to either keep the specifics of our purchases confidential, or offer me comparable products from a less-nosy manufacturer.

But wait. It doesn’t stop there.

I am a highly regarded member of various industry associations, and I am making my position known to all the companies, trade groups and publications that serve my industry. I want everyone to know that our privacy is of great importance, and we will not tolerate any attempts to subordinate our rights for the sake of one company’s desire for marketing information.
