Qualcomm Inc. introduced its Eudora Internet Suite version 1.1 for the Palm operating system, allowing any Palm-based device with a wireless or wired Internet connection to browse the Internet without going through a proxy server, the company said. It also supports e-mail management and synchronization capabilities. It is available free to those using Qualcomm’s Eudora 4.3.2 e-mail program. For those using other desktop e-mail programs, access to the unlimited sync feature will cost $30.
Research In Motion Ltd. released first quarter earnings with a net income of $388,000, or 1 cent per share, compared with a net income of $1.8 million for the first quarter of last year. The company attributed the earnings decline to higher expenditures for sales and marketing, as well as increased research and development initiatives. Revenue was $27.1 million, compared with $16.2 million for the same period last year. RIM Wireless Handheld devices accounted for 25 percent of the revenues, while its BlackBerry devices and service contributed 50 percent.
Telus Advanced Communications announced it has incorporated Phone.com Inc.’s Onebox unified messaging system. Onebox is a central repository where all of a user’s selected e-mail, voice mail and faxes sit for one-stop retrieval. Phone.com bought Onebox earlier this year.
Tritel Inc., a member of the AT&T Wireless Network, signed up the 100,000th SunCom customer on its digital wireless network, nine months after signing up its first customer. “We are very pleased with the response we have received since launching our wireless service in late September 1999,” noted William Mounger II, chairman and chief executive officer of Tritel. “Signing up our 100,000th customer in only nine months of commercial operation is yet another milestone in this company’s short history.”
MessageLink Inc. reported it has acquired the paging assets of GTE Wireless Inc., just a day before its merger with Verizon Wireless closed. The acquisition adds 40,000 paging subscribers to MessageLink’s base.
