HELSINKI, Finland-Nokia Corp. and Singapore mobile operator M1 plan to begin field trials of third-generation wideband Code Division Multiple Access technology.
Nokia said it will use the trial to evaluate 3G W-CDMA technology in a real operating environment, including a demonstration of Internet Protocol-based mobile services and applications.
“M1 is one of the few mobile operators in the world to have successfully launched both [Global System for Mobile communications] and CDMA networks,” noted Neil Montefiore, chief executive officer of M1. “It is only natural therefore that we should take the lead in conducting trials in the next generation of mobile technology which combines some of the best elements of both of these systems.”
In addition, Nokia announced it signed a contract with Finland’s third nationwide mobile operator Finnish 2G to deliver Wireless Application Protocol infrastructure.
Nokia will supply its Artus Messaging Platform, which serves as a WAP gateway for mobile networks, Artus SMS Center, Artus Messaging Platform and Picture Messaging Application.
Nokia also reported the successful demonstration of a wireless Internet synchronization using the SyncML protocol at the SyncML Supporter Summit in Los Angeles.
Nokia said the demonstration was over the hypertext transport protocol, and proves that SyncML has potential to rapidly emerge as the de facto standard for wireless and wireline synchronization.
