ATLANTA-Stephen Carter was named president and chief executive officer of the joint-venture company that will be created with the merger of SBC Communications Inc.’s and BellSouth Corp.’s wireless operations.
Carter was president of SBC Wireless, and was responsible for the company’s U.S. wireless operations.
Mark Feidler was named the joint venture’s chief operating officer, having previously served as president of BellSouth’s domestic wireless operations.
“We’ll move quickly to put the rest of the leadership team in place and finalize our plans for launching this new company, establishing a national brand and integrating our operations so that our customers can begin to benefit from our combined strengths,” said Carter.
The new company, to be managed independently from both parents by a four-seat board of directors, is expected to be the second-largest wireless carrier in the country, serving approximately 16 million subscribers.
Operations are expected to begin by the end of the year.
