NEW YORK-Not only are more business travelers carrying wireless phones, but they are making more calls on the road from those phones, according to a business traveler survey conducted by American Express Co. and recent statistics from the American Express Corporate Card.
The survey, which polled 600 business travelers, showed that 53 percent of corporate travelers carried a wireless phone, a 28-percent increase from last year. The survey also revealed that 59 percent of all calls placed from the road are now made using wireless phones, up 2 percent from last year. Meanwhile, the use of pay phones dropped to 7.6 percent from 11 percent a year ago.
Of the wireless calls made, the survey showed that 46 percent were for business or keeping in touch with the office and 40 percent were personal calls to family, with Internet and e-mail access accounting for 8 percent of on-the-road telecom charges.
