Motorola outlines cdma2000 evolution plans

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola Inc.’s Network Solutions Sector outlined plans for supplying cdma2000 1x Evolution-Data Only, the next generation of cdma2000 technology, as the next step in the evolution of third-generation wireless systems based on Qualcomm Inc.’s CDMA High Data Rate technology.

Motorola said the technology is being developed in two standards processes, with the first technology standard, 1xEV-DO, scheduled to be completed by the third quarter. An approved industry schedule for the second technology, 1x Evolution-Data and Voice, will be determined by the second half of next year.

Motorola said it expects to begin cdma2000 1x field trials in the fourth quarter, with commercial software and hardware expected to be available starting in the third quarter 2001.

“Motorola’s major CDMA customers in North America and Japan voted in favor of the new EV-DO standard, so that is exactly what we are going to give them,” said Adrian Nemcek, senior vice president of Motorola NSS.

“We want to provide our customers with smart solutions that will accelerate their time-to-market and allow existing networks to smoothly migrate to new CDMA technology.”
