Bank of America launches wireless banking

Bank of America launched a wireless banking and brokerage offering last week in limited markets through a partnership with 724 Solutions Inc.

Bank of America Private Bank customers in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., will be able to conduct banking transactions and access financial markets and investment information from wireless devices such as phones and personal digital assistants, the company said. Plans call for the solution to be rolled out to other markets in the next year. There is no extra charge for the service.

Bank of America offers online banking services to all customers. It tapped 724 Solutions Inc. to create the wireless extension to this service. Banking uses include viewing account balances and transaction histories for checking, savings and credit-card accounts, as well as transferring funds between them.

Future implementations could add brokerage trading and electronic bill payment.

Networks supported include AT&T Wireless Services Inc., Sprint PCS and Verizon Wireless and devices include the Palm Vx with OmniSky modem and service, Motorola StarTac and Timeport phones, the NeoPoint 1000 and Mitsubishi t250 phones.

Last year, Bank of America offered a wireless banking service in California for the Palm VII, but that pilot program is separate from the partnership with 724 Solutions. The bank said it will migrate customers on that program to the new solution.
