Phone makers agree on SAR information

WASHINGTON-The world’s top mobile-phone manufacturers have agreed to include radiation data with new phones, a move that comes as suspicion has increased about whether wireless devices cause brain cancer.

The vendors-Finland’s Nokia Corp., Sweden’s L.M. Ericsson and U.S.-based Motorola Inc.-said radiation information will not be available to consumers until next year, or until a standard is developed to measure the specific rate of absorption of phone radiation by human tissue.

The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association’s board approved a new policy in June requiring all mobile phones seeking CTIA certification after Aug. 1 to include radiation data.

Government regulators in the United States and overseas say there is no firm evidence that links the world’s 570 million mobile phones to cancer, but that more research is needed before a health risk can be entirely ruled out.
