SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.-The U.S. Coast Guard awarded Motorola Inc. a $7.8 million contract to develop a preliminary design for the National Distress and Response System Modernization Program, an integrated communications and information solution designed to enhance the safety of the nation’s waterways and shores.

Motorola said the design, when completed, could lead to the construction and maintenance of a $300 million distributed voice/data communications and situational awareness system that includes fixed and mobile communications assets.
