China Unicom to use CDMA

BEIJING-Qualcomm Inc. may be back in China after that country’s second-largest wireless provider, China Unicom, said it would build a mobile-phone network using Qualcomm’s CDMA technology.

China Unicom also indicated it would set up a subsidiary to build and operate the CDMA network, but would not release a time line on the launch, according to Reuters.

“In short, the scale of the network will be determined by market demand,” Wang Jianzhou, executive vice president of China Unicom told reporters.

Earlier this year, China Unicom abandoned plans to implement a wireless network based on CDMA technology, favoring instead to continue expansion of its GSM network.

Qualcomm’s stock was trading down $1.63 in Friday afternoon trading at $75.38 per share.
