ABU DHABI, UAE-ETISALAT, the United Arab Emirates telecommunications service provider, and Motorola announced today they completed a live mobile data transfer in the Middle East.
ETISALAT hopes the transfer, which used GPRS technology, will open a new market of Internet-based services for the company’s subscriber base of more than 1 million customers. GPRS is scheduled to be commercially available on the ETISALAT network in 2001.
GPRS high-speed mobile data service provides rapid connection to Internet-based services. In the past few months, Motorola and Cisco Systems Inc. have launched commercial GPRS networks for companies in the United Kingdom, Germany, Turkey and China.
ETISALAT plans to test the viability of using GPRS to offer corporate e-mail access, personalized stock quotes and mobile banking and e-commerce services.
