Hungary to award UMTS licenses next year

BUCHAREST, Romania-Hungary is preparing to launch an auction for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) licenses in second-quarter 2001.

According Andras Somogyi, the director of the International Organization Communications Authority, the frequency ranges for the third-generation services are located as follows: 1900 MHz to 1980 MHz and 2010 MHz to 2025 MHz for terrestrial fixed and mobile services, and 1980 MHz to 2010 MHz and 2170 MHz to 2200 MHz for satellite applications.

“The auction (or “beauty contest”-no decision on the award process has yet been announced) will be managed expectedly in the spring of next year,” said Somogyi.

Hungary is the latest country in Eastern Europe to announce UMTS licensing plans, following Poland, the Baltic states, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
