PARIS-SkyPoint, a Spanish telecom operator with a wireless access license in the 26 GHz band, selected Alcatel to supply its local multipoint distribution service equipment. The initial phase of the project is valued at $84 million.
SkyPoint’s network is currently being deployed throughout seven major Spanish cities, and SkyPoint will start commercially offering its services next year. The Alcatel contract includes base stations, customer premises equipment and network and service management. Alcatel also will develop applications for network services that will be deployed next year on the LMDS platform.
Alcatel has won similar wireless broadband contracts with Retevision in Spain, BellSouth in Uruguay and Pro Futuro in Poland. The manufacturer also recently won two European contracts to deliver Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems networks in Italy and France.
SkyPoint is owned 30 percent by Grapes Communications, 30 percent by Star One, 15 percent each by Recoletos and Unedisa, and 10 percent by Isolux.
