Three Qualcomm patents upheld in Europe

SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. said the European Patent Office upheld the validity of one of the company’s patents, which comes after two years of opposition from Nokia Mobile Phones Ltd.

Qualcomm’s patent, called “Method and Apparatus for Determining the Data Rate of a Received Signal,” allows voice data to be transmitted at a variable rate without the need to include data that identifies the transmission rate.

“This invention is an important component of Qualcomm’s portfolio of patents that are essential to existing and third-generation CDMA systems,” said Ben Miller, the company’s vice president and chief patent strategist.

Qualcomm also announced the EPO ruled in the company’s favor on two other patents, one for a frequency synthesizer and another for a technique to monitor a mobile phone in a cellular system.
