LAKE CHARLES, La.-Under a plan that would more fully integrate the two companies, Sprint PCS network partner US Unwired Inc. announced it would outsource most of its customer care and billing functions to Sprint PCS.
US Unwired said the move would allow it to deploy its services more quickly with less capital costs. The agreement also fixes the current roaming rate between the two companies through 2002.

“US Unwired has operated its own billing and customer care platforms since 1987. While we originally intended to continue operating these systems, Sprint PCS’ rapid pace of technological development has increased the cost of maintaining separate functions,” said Robert Piper, US Unwired’s president and chief executive officer. “This agreement allows us to eliminate any network compatibility issues and decrease network compliance costs.”
