BELLEVUE, Wash.-The Universal Wireless Communications Consortium announced there were 53 million TDMA-EDGE subscribers worldwide by the end of the third quarter, which is a 78-percent increase since the same time last year.
The consortium said the fastest-growing market was the Latin America/Caribbean region, which had 24.1 million subscribers.
This, the organization said, is a 121-percent increase from last year. In North America, there were 27.3 million subscribers, a 61-percent increase.
The UWCC is a consortium of about 100 wireless carriers and vendors that support the TDMA-EDGE and Wireless In-building Network technology standards.
