CTIA spells out location guides for FCC

The Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association moved to set the standard for location-based services privacy principles by laying out its own guidelines to the Federal Communications Commission.

CTIA said it hopes the guidelines will become the standard for carriers, manufacturers and vendors in location-based information.

The principles include requiring location providers to inform their customers about what information they’re collecting; providing customers with a way to consent to the collection before it’s used; ensuring the security of the information; and providing ubiquitous rules and expectations.

“It is vital that consumers understand location-based services and related technology, and feel comfortable using it,” said Tom Wheeler, CTIA’s president and chief executive officer.
