BEIJING-According to Beijing-based consultancy BDA, reports of the death of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) in China have been greatly exaggerated, as 69 million people in China will be accessing the Internet over their mobile phones by 2004. China Mobile will begin charging fees for WAP services, which will give content providers a greater incentive to begin providing services.
China will have more than 70 million mobile subscribers and 21 million Internet subscribers by the end of 2000, reaching 236 million and 120 million respectively by 2004, according to BDA.
