BOSTON-In a new report, Strategy Analytics said it expects 2.5-generation technologies to dominate the world market through 2010, generating revenues of about $450 billion with 1.3 billion users.
“Globally in 2010, of the expected 1.3 billion wireless data users, only 24 percent will access 3G networks,” said David Kerr, the company’s vice president of wireless services.
“The reality is that 3G networks will not deliver nor is there pent-up demand for the interactive multimedia applications that would require data rates in excess of 384 kilobits per second.”
The research report, “Strategy Analytics Predicts 2.5G to Dominate Wireless Data Market,” also states messaging will be the major revenue source during this time, but entertainment applications will take over by the second half of the coming decade.
