Verizon urges statewide hands-free legislation in N.Y.

ORANGEBURG, N.Y.-Verizon Wireless urged the New York State Legislature to consider statewide legislation requiring drivers to use hands-free devices while using cell phones and driving.

Verizon said its announcement comes in response to a rash of local ordinances that are being considered in New York counties including New York City, Nassau, Westchester, Erie, Chautauqua, Rensselaer and Rockland counties. Suffolk County, New York, recently implemented a ban on the use of handheld cell phones while driving. The law, which the Suffolk County legislature passed 12-6, calls for violators to be fined up to $150 for each offense. The legislation exempts emergency services workers and people making emergency calls, and includes a clause allowing the use of hands-free devices.

Dan Mullin, Verizon Wireless’ director of state public policy, noted that Verizon’s appeal to the state legislature was needed to implement statewide uniformity in laws regarding the use of cell phones while driving.

“Fines range from $50 to $500 and one New York City proposal includes 10 days in jail for a second offense,” Mullin said. “Under the terms of a proposed Westchester County ordinance, a citizen can even be fined for talking on a cell phone while mowing his front lawn on a riding mower.”
