AT&T Wireless Services Inc. made the move to invest in the infrastructure services necessary to comply with the Federal Communications Commission’s Phase II E-911 mandate with a multi-year agreement with emergency communications service provider SCC Communications Corp. Under the agreement, SCC will provide call routing and delivery and transmission of wireless location data for AT&T’s 15 million customers.
Officials in Korea and Europe upheld three of Qualcomm Inc.’s patent claims, the company said. Motorola Inc. had opposed the patents. The Korean Intellectual Property Office upheld patents for power control inventions for CDMA telecommunications standards and for a method and apparatus for the formatting of data for transmission. The European Patent Office also upheld the validity of a patent that discloses a processor used in CDMA receivers to normalize incoming blocks of data.
Verizon Wireless launched digital service in Cheyenne, Wyo., the first city in Wyoming with access to Verizon Wireless’ digital service. Previously, Verizon Wireless offered only analog service in the area.
Sprint PCS announced it will feature Wau.com on its wireless Web, which will offer a Spanish-language site to Sprint’s customers.
Airbiquity and Televigation launched a global positioning system-enabled, voice-activated location application that provides location services such as traffic reports and driving directions based on a user’s actual position, the companies said. The location capability is provided by Airbiquity’s GPS Accessory, a retrofittable device consisting of GPS technology embedded in the battery of Nokia Corp. wireless phones, and Televigation provides the voice-activated navigation services.
@Track Communications Inc. announced its third-largest customer, Contract Freighters Inc., extended its service contract for mobile communications through this year, and will provide input and assistance for the @Track’s next-generation technology development.
