Moscow carrier approved for CDMA 400 MHz system

MOSCOW-The Russian Communications Ministry has prepared a permission for Moscow Cellular Communications carrier to create a Code Division Multiple Access 400 MHz network in the metropolitan area of the capital.

The network is to operate in the 453 MHz to 457.5 MHz and 463 MHz to 467.5 MHz bands.

Lucent Technologies Inc. will supply Flexent CDMA Modular Cell equipment for the new network, while South Korean Hyundai Electronics Industries and U.S.-based Qualcomm are to provide the terminals.

MCC plans to launch trial operation of the new network in the second quarter of 2001 and to pass the final decision on the compatibility of the new technology with existing ones not later than the second quarter of 2002.
