According to NTT DoCoMo, 147 kids, or 24.5 percent of the surveyed 600, have their own cellular phones. The average possession rate among elementary school kids is 19.3 percent, while among middle school kids it is 29.7 percent, DoCoMo said.

The rate is especially high among middle-school girls at 32.1 percent. Nearly half the surveyed (44.9 percent) children said that cellular phones are a necessity of their daily lives, DoCoMo said.
