LAS VEGAS-Symbian, a provider of software platforms for next-generation mobile phones, made several announcements at the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association’s Wireless 2001 show last week in Las Vegas and at CeBIT in Germany.
Symbian unveiled its 2.5G platform, Symbian platform v6.1, a fully integrated operating system platform for GPRS-enabled smart phones and communicators. The new platform also supports WAP 1.2 and advanced Bluetooth, which the company calls the “necessary building blocks” to create services and applications for wireless devices running on GPRS-enabled networks.
Symbian will partner with several vendors to provide seamless connectivity solutions for users of next-generation mobile devices. Aether Systems, FusionOne, Pumatech and Starfish Software will provide connectivity solutions for Symbian-based devices so all mobile users can connect and synchronize with corporate intranets, PCs, network servers and other mobile devices.
PacketVideo Corp. announced it has become a member of the Symbian Technology Partner Program, and together the companies will provide mobile multimedia solutions for developers using the Symbian platform. PacketVideo has optimized PVPlayerO, its mobile video decoding software, for Symbian’s mobile operating system.
AvantGo Inc., provider of mobile infrastructure software and services, and Symbian announced a partnership that will enable AvantGo to bring Web-based services, content and business application to Symbian-based devices. Under the agreement, AvantGo will be considered a Symbian Technology Partner, thus allowing AvantGo to work with Symbian to develop and co-market technologies.
