SAN DIEGO, Calif.-Qualcomm Inc. said Hewlett-Packard Co. has integrated the MicroChaiVM, an embedded software for running applications developed for the Java platform, onto BREW handsets.
The software was installed in four BREW-enabled Kyocera phones, including prototype color-display handsets manufactured by Samsung and Denso Corp.
“By porting our virtual machine to the BREW platform, we immediately gained access to multiple devices,” said William Woo, general manager of HP’s embedded software operation.
In other BREW news, NetZero Inc. has developed a wireless advertising initiative, based on Qualcomm’s BREW platform, to enable marketers to advertise via mobile applications.
The initiative called HardCell is independent of NetZero’s Internet access service and will be available to all types of mobile applications providers, according to a press statement.
“The development of HardCell marks the first time the company will have the opportunity to extend its targeting technology to mobile devices,” said Mark Goldston, NetZero’s chairman and chief executive officer.
