IBM offers “wireless” components for the desktop

In the drive to miniaturize, IBM Corp. is leveraging the strengths of wireless for its desktop technology.

Pursuant to that, the company has introduced wireless enhancements to create a cordless, clean-desk environment for the end user.

The wireless kit consists of a keyboard, mouse and receiver in a sleek, black design.

Bruce Rasa, IBM’s product marketing manager, said the solution includes 17 rapid access keyboard buttons to enhance the launch of applications and for routine tasks, 12 RF channels to eliminate interference from other devices, a USB connection for rapid plug and play and a saddle-shaped cap on the scroll point mouse.

“This the first time this technology is being introduced,’ said Rasa.

By eliminating cords, the wireless technology makes IBM produce its X40 and x40i all-in-one computers with a radial arm which makes it easy to move the computer around the desk from one edge to the other or on the wall.

Rasa said the main features of the computer, including processor, memory and hard drive, are behind the display screen, so that it is like a laptop on a suspender. The display is flat-paneled centerpiece.

“It is a full-function desktop computer with unique configuration and the wireless keyboard mouse produces the finishing touches,” he said.

IBM believes with the combination of the wireless keyboard and mouse kit, the NetVista X40 is the ultimate solution for users who seek both desktop computing power as well as a flexibility and space-saving in stylish computing environment.

The NetVista X40 also features a microprocessor that packs up to 1 GHz speed.

“As PCs become more of a commodity over time, special features and good ergonomics will rise in importance as buying criteria,” said Roger Kay, research manager at IDC.

Rasa said IBM will continue to leverage both wired and wireless divisions of its operations to offer solutions such as the NetVista X40.

“Increasingly,” he said, “we will offer wireless LANs and networking products from the PC standpoint.”
