Handspring meets analyst expectations

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.-Personal digital assistant maker Handspring Inc. released its third quarter earnings report, meeting analysts’ expectations and drawing $123.8 million.

The company’s earnings for the quarter, ended March 31, were a 261-percent increase from the same period last year, and 7 percent better than the previous quarter. Handspring attributed its success to strong demand for its high-end PDAs, including the recently released Edge model.

“We are pleased with the results of the quarter, particularly our ability to achieve revenue growth in what is usually a sequentially down quarter in our industry,” said Donna Dubinsky, Handspring’s founder and chief executive officer. “We believe this growth demonstrates both acceptance of our new products, as well as ongoing growth in the handheld computing sector in spite of an economic slowdown.”

Handspring’s reports closely follow similar good news from Research In Motion Ltd., which makes the BlackBerry wireless text device. However, PDA heavyweight Palm Inc. has not been fairing so well-it was recently forced to trim prices to clear out its inventory and cut 250 jobs.
