LONDON-In yet another setback for third-generation technology, Manx Telecom, a subsidiary of British Telecommunications plc, has postponed its mid-May launch of 3G services on the tiny Isle of Man. The delay was blamed on software problems in handsets, according to international press reports.
The 3G launch, which was set to be the first commercial 3G service after NTT DoCoMo delayed its end-May launch last month until October, will now be at the end of summer or in early autumn, the reports said.
Phones supplied by NEC Corp. had software problems, forcing the company to postpone the service. The launch is still on track to be the first in Europe, offering other European carriers insight into 3G infrastructure investments, profitable applications and services, coverage issues and potential challenges.
