Sprint PCS begins prepaid test marketing

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Sprint PCS said test marketing of a prepaid wireless phone program with wireless Internet access in Northeast Ohio will begin this month.

The service, dubbed Cube, is targeted at the youth market and includes a TP1100 flip-phone, $10 in airtime and a payment card for adding airtime minutes for $130. The handset includes free voice mail and caller identification, a wireless Web browser and an address book.

Sprint said trial participants will be able to make calls to Ohio as well as Crawford, Erie, Lawrence and Mercer counties in Pennsylvania without incurring long-distance charges. The phones will also work anywhere on the carrier’s nationwide network.

Price plans for the service include wireless Web use and talking during nights and weekends at 15 cents per minute, weekday talktime between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. billed at 45 cents per minute, text-messaging at 10 cents per minute and long-distance calls for an additional 15 cents per minute.

The trial is expected to continue through the summer.
