NEW YORK-Sony Electronics and GoAmerica Inc. introduced a new MYLO wireless service at the PC Expo here June 25 that will provide Internet access for users of CLIE monochrome handheld and VAIO notebook computers.
“MYLO stands for `My Life Online’. Sony … will offer mobile users an original and personalized way to access information and entertainment content for work and play,” said Cynthia Rennolds, director of IT network services at the Sony Electronics Information Technologies Product Division, San Diego.
MYLO wireless service requires a Sierra Wireless AirPath SC300 PCMCIA modem card, which slips into the GoAmerica modem adapter for Sony CLIE PEG-S320 and PEG-S300 handhelds and into any PCMCIA slot on a notebook computer.
MYLO will operate first on CDPD networks. In addition, access via Metricom’s Ricochet service will become available in September.
Using proprietary Go.Web technology developed by GoAmerica, Hackensack, N.J., MYLO encrypts and compresses data while reformatting it for the screen size best suited to the particular mobile Internet. The service permits users to personalize information, bookmark favorite sites and disable images to achieve faster browsing.
GoAmerica said it will begin selling its wireless modem adapter at retailers nationwide “for under $200 with a 12-month contract and a $100 mail-in rebate.”
Sony said its MYLO service, which allows unlimited Internet access, will be available at the monthly rate of $40 for CLIE handhelds, $60 for VAIO notebook computers and $80 for both.
