NextBus implemented in Fairfax

FAIRFAX, Va.-The City of Fairfax, Virginia went wireless last week with NextBus Information Systems Inc., a company that prides itself on delivering accurate, real time travel information to public transit passengers and workers.

NextBus uses GPS satellites to track buses and then transmits arrival times to the bus stop and on the wired and wireless Web. By checking www.nextbus.com, passengers can see up-to-the-minute arrival time predictions, as opposed to previously posted schedules, on any Internet-accessible device, including PCs, handheld devices and Web-enabled mobile phones.

This latest deployment comes on the tail of an award Nextbus received last month from the Intelligent Transportation Society of America for the best timesaving deployment of the year. “The goal of our system is to put control of the public transit experience into the hands of the passenger,” said NextBus CEO Jim Maresca. “This recognition confirms that we have touched upon one of the main concerns of the transit user: How can I use public transit and not waste time waiting? The NextBus system has provided the answer.”

The NextBus system is now in use in California, Virginia, Colorado, Massachusetts and Delaware.
