US Unwired completes initial buildout phase

LAKE CHARLES, La.-US Unwired Inc. said it has completed the initial phase of network buildout in its Sprint PCS service territory, including all 41 of its markets covering more than 6.4 million residents, or approximately 65 percent of the population in its territory.

The carrier’s service territory includes 164,500 square miles from east Texas through the Florida panhandle, and is covered with 820 cell sites and three switching centers. The company said it plans to place up to 250 additional cell sites in service over the next 18 months to bolster local highway and residential coverage, with plans to cover 75 percent of the residents in the near future.
