EC publishes new cellular-phone safety standards

BRUSSELS, Belgium-The European Commission has published new safety standards on electromagnetic fields for mobile-phone manufacturers. The limits, which “will not expose users to excessive electromagnetic waves,” will apply to mobile phones marketed within the European Union, an EC statement said.

The standards were established through new measurement methods based on “dummy heads” filled with test devices, measuring specific absorption rate for human exposure to electromagnetic fields. The new safety standard goes beyond the current standard in fixing limits to electromagnetic exposure, the EC said.

The new standard, called EN 50360, relates to basic restrictions for electromagnetic fields in the range of 300 MHz to 3 GHz.

Cellular phone manufacturers are currently cooperating in defining safety standards and applying them, the EC said. Further standards covering GSM base stations and antennas, anti-theft ports and low-power radio devices are expected.
