LONDON—For the second month running, India’s cellular industry showed gains of more than 200,000 subscribers. A record 211,000 people signed on to mobile services in July, surpassing the previous month’s record of 206,000 new subscribers.
The figures, from the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), reveal that nearly 4.29 million India citizens now use mobile phones. The key cellular players—Birla, AT&T, Tata and BPL—have a total of 1.04 million subscribers between them, while Hutchison and Bharti have 890,000 and 840,000 subscribers respectively.
The capital, Delhi, continues to dominate the national cellular scene with more than 650,000 users, followed closely by Mumbai (formerly Bombay) with 640,000 users.
