Uzbekistan to launch CDMA network

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan—The Central Asian republic of Uzbekistan is going to launch commercial operation of a CDMA network this year to mark the 10th anniversary of independence after the collapse of the former Soviet Union.
South Korean LG Electronics supplied the equipment operating in the 800 MHz band.
The network will initially operate in the capital of Tashkent with 30,000 subscribers. By 2004 it is expected to expand to 200,000 users. The country, with a population of 23 million, has 100,000 wireless subscribers.
LG Electronics also plans to supply Uzbekistan with CDMA 1x equipment, which will help the migration to third-generation (3G) technologies by the end of 2002.
