Oracle releases earnings, comments on tragedy

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.—Oracle Corp. released its earnings report on schedule Thursday but without comment. The company said it is missing seven employees in the World Trade Center in New York and that one employee, sales account manager Todd Beamer, 32, was killed when hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

“Our heart goes out to all of the families who have lost loved ones,” the company wrote in a statement. “We pray more survivors will be found. Our efforts and energies are now focused on helping the agencies of our government … respond to this national emergency. Our people, computers and facilities are being retasked to help these agencies re-establish systems that have been interrupted by the attack.”

Oracle, which makes wireless servers, said it would issue another press release and hold a conference call when the markets reopen.

The company posted income of $511 million on revenue of $2.24 billion in the first quarter, ended August 31, showing surprisingly solid growth amid a slowing sales environment. The company’s revenues are down slightly from the $2.26 billion the company scored during the same time last year, but Oracle’s net income was up about $10 million compared with last year.

Oracle’s release was the first major bit of corporate news after the attacks last week. A variety of other companies, including Adobe Systems, Meridian Medical Technologies Inc. and General Mills, delayed the released of their quarterly earnings reports.
