Wireless Village demonstrates mobile instant messaging

KISTA, Sweden—Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia, founders of the Wireless Village initiative, said they have successfully demonstrated interoperable mobile instant messaging and presence services.

The companies said that in the demonstration, three different mobile phones connected with two different mobile instant messaging and presence servers—one in Sweden and one in the United States. In addition, features of the Wireless Village client-server protocol allowed the phones to authenticate to a remote mobile IMPS server, exchange presence information, and send and receive instant messages.

“Interoperability is a challenge in today’s telecommunications world; therefore, this first interoperability demo is a major step for Wireless Village, and ensures interoperability in the future,” said Jan Svensson, vice president of Ericsson Mobile Phones.
