Japanese firm to launch high-speed service in November

TOKYO—Wireless Internet Service (WIS), a start-up mobile service provider in Tokyo, is going to launch high-speed mobile Internet service on 1 November in cooperation with NTT-ME. Using the 2.4 GHz band, WIS will provide 2 Megabits per second (Mbps) service at 1,980 yen (US$17) per month, the lowest broadband charge in Japan.

WIS is going to construct and operate communications infrastructure for the service, and NTT-ME, a multimedia business unit of NTT, will provide Internet service provider (ISP) services. Both firms are targeting to win 100,000 subscribers.

Separately, WIS is planning to launch 11 Mbps mobile communications service at less than 4,000 yen (US$34) per month in the near future.<
