TEMPE, Ariz.—Making headway in the development of miniature fuel cells that may someday power cellular phones, Motorola Labs researchers announced they have demonstrated a prototype of a methanol fuel cell system (DMFC) and have built several components that will be required for a methanol to hydrogen fuel cell (RHFC).
The miniature ceramic-based DMFC fuel cells produce more than 100mW continuous net power, and according to Motorola the system has operated in the lab for up to a week at a time with little degradation in performance. Motorola said it hopes to eventually combine the newly developed RHFC components with a fuel cell, resulting in a single device that produces 1W or greater power.
