WATERLOO, Canada—Research In Motion Ltd. announced earnings in line with many analyst expectations, but lowered its forecasts for the future due to a troubled economy, slow rollouts of GPRS networks and the “weakened financial condition of Motient Corp.”
RIM reported revenue for the second quarter of $80.1 million, up $37.6 million from the $42.5 million the company earned during the same quarter last year. The net loss for the quarter was $17.5 million, compared with $1.6 million in the same quarter a year ago. RIM said the total number of BlackBerry subscribers increased to 246,000 and that more than 12,000 companies use the company’s BlackBerry device in their organizations.
However, RIM took a $23 million write-down because of the troubles at Motient, one of RIM’s resellers and one of two companies that operate the networks BlackBerrys operate on.
