BEIJING—A plan, first floated by China’s Ministry of Information Industry (MII), to eventually merge China Unicom and China Railcom has been put on hold and may not materialize for several years, if at all.
During the past couple of years, China Unicom managed to grab around one-quarter of mobile services in China, but it accounts for less than 1 percent of China’s fixed lines.
Newly established China Railcom does not currently have mobile operations but has started to connect customers to its fixed-line network laid along the country’s railways.
