European awareness of ASPs high, but most not likely to implement services

LONDON—Although European awareness of application service providers (ASPs) is growing, enterprises still seem cautious to implement the services, according to a recent Frost & Sullivan survey.

Of the companies surveyed, 74 percent are accurately aware of ASPs as the entity that “manages and delivers application capabilities to multiple entities from a data center across a wide area network or the Internet,” said Frost & Sullivan.

“While the majority of non-ASP users do not have concrete plans for applying an ASP solution within the next two years, 23 percent said that they were likely consider taking the plunge within this timeframe,” John Gilsenan, Frost & Sullivan research manager, said. “The reasons behind their apprehension ranged from perceived lack of applications availability to security and inadequate network performance.”

The ASPs holding the most public awareness were Oracle, which 13 percent of respondents recognized; IBM Global Services (12.5 percent recognized); Microsoft (5.5 percent recognized); BTIgnite (4.1 percent recognized); and Telecomputing, the only pure ASP, recognized by 4.1 percent of respondents.

The companies were most interested in outsourcing accounting software, e-mail and e-commerce initiatives through ASPs.
