DENVER, United States—The Barbados government has agreed with Cable & Wireless for the U.K.-based telecom company to give up its monopoly on telecom services during the next 21 months. International press reports said the agreement is similar to those reached between Cable & Wireless and other Caribbean governments, such as Jamaica.
Liberalization will begin in December. Cable & Wireless’ licenses originally were scheduled to expire in 2011.
Cable & Wireless is currently the only mobile operator in Barbados, but additional licenses are expected to be awarded, with supervision by Barbados’ Fair Trading Commission.
