BEIJING—China’s second-largest mobile operator, China Unicom, plans to put its CDMA network in commercial use early next year. So far, 24 million yuan (US$2.9 million) has been invested to build more than 14,000 base stations.
Motorola, Lucent, Nortel, Ericsson and Qualcomm recently demonstrated their CDMA 1x solutions in Shanghai.
China Unicom plans to expand its CDMA network to 50 million subscribers by the end of 2005, when it might become the world’s largest. Initially, the network will accommodate 15.5 million users.
